Time and the Rani is better in every single department.

Mark of the Rani.

Pretty dull, but it doesn't have McCoy's silly pratfalls or that drawn-out nonsense with the Rani impersonating Mel.

No,  it just has better visuals, a more engaging plot, an exciting climax, excellent monsters and a wonderfully atmospheric score Wink

This.

Time and the Rani is the nadir of the show.

It wasn't a more engaging plot to me. Or at least not engaging enough.

I distinctly reaching the first cliffhanger and thinking this is a very impressive cliffhanger, and yet everything else about the story so far was so demoralizing it made me still not want to continue into episode 2.

I think Mark of the Rani is the better of the two by far. But I do like Time and the Rani and think it is not as bad as its reputation would suggest. I will say this:

Time and the Rani > Seeds of Doom

I decided to watch Seeds again after reading that Seeds vs. Zygons thread, and it still put me to sleep. I didn't make it past episode 2.

There's a famous quote from pornstar Ron Jeremy:

"Sometimes you just have to admit that you're right and everybody else is wrong. Time and the Rani is a true classic. The fact that you're enlightened enough to see that means you have a healthy mind."

That has always stuck with me.

Yeah but Ron Jeremy's a bit of a slimeball, Maxil.

Agreed. LOL

Upon reading this thread and the “stickiest turd” poll, I thought I’d check out Time and the Rani again. Even as a fan of the McCoy era and McCoy’s Doctor, that story is fucking shite. The acting is uniformly dire, the world-building and characterisation of its guest characters near non-existent, and McCoy doesn’t seem comfortable in the role in any way whatsoever, which is a shame considering that I really rate him and his era post season 24. As for the incidental music- the best parts of it are the ones available on the soundtrack album. The rest of it is crap- sorry, Maxil. Big Grin

I don’t mind Mark of the Rani, to be honest. In response to Maxil concerning the story looking better, I though the opening shots and opening piece of music in Mark of the Rani were actually really good (and certainly rather atmospheric), and better than anything in Time and the Rani. It’s not great, but it’s hardly awful either.

It's obviously Mark. TATR is the only Sylv I can't watch.

It's obviously Time. If you can't watch it then maybe you should purchase a copy of the DVD.

Mark feels rather stale to me. There's nothing particularly remarkable about it except for Kate O'Mara's performance. Time is a fresh beginning to an exciting new era which boasts superior effects, more dynamic camerawork and a score that has aged far better than anything produced by the Radiophonic Workshop. The story remains the more whimsical and lively out of all the scripts penned by Pip and Jane Baker.

I’ll be fair here. The effects in Time and the Rani are actually rather good, all things considered, and the music at its peak is very good too- some of its more low-key moments are rather atmospheric and even ethereal (even if I do find the score inconsistent). My issues lie in basically every other area.

Mark of the Rani. Better acted. Especially Kate O'Mara who hammed it up to enormous elevels in T&TR. And Ainley gave one of his better performances as the Master. He seemed more restrained than in some of his previous stories and he was better for it. More interesting story.

Time and the Rani is visually good, more briskly directed but woefully acted.

Mark of the Rani is also visually good, has more pedestrial slower direction but better acted.

Out of the two I prefer "Mark" purely because the humour is less forced and actually funny and the acting not like a fucking pantomime.

I do like the bubble traps. tetraps and model effects in "Time" however as awful as some of its other components can be.

At least Luke turning into a tree in "Mark" is piss your pants funny, McCoy pratfalling around and playing the spoons on Kate O'Mara's tits isn't. Mind you, I'll give a point for O'Maras impersonation of Langford in "Time", that was mildly entertaining within a cacophony of shite Play School drama students.
