so (avoiding cinema or recast roles or spoofs) it's...

1. Jon Pertwee - consistently definitive, with a dash of style

2. Tom Baker - outstandingly bohemian brilliance

3. Patrick Troughton - innovative, erratic par excellence

4. William Hartnell - the supremely authoritative original

then a slight gap before...

5. the rest of the classic era Docs (just can't decide between 'em) - Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy - all competent, occasional flashes of brilliance

6. Paul McGann - showed some promise but never given a fair chance

7. Matt Smith - best of the New Who Docs, let down by poor stories

8. John Hurt - could've been a real contender (if cast legitimately)

9. Peter Capaldi - unrealized potential and critically compromised

10. Christopher Eccleston - miscast but there's worse to come...

11. David Tennant - simply a wrong turn and inexplicably overhyped

then a yawning chasm until we hit rock bottom with...

12. Jodie 'Who' - well only on this list at all by a technicality
