I would like a 3,000 word essay on why the McCoy era isn't a 10/10 on your list.

Deadline: 03/02/20

The problem with the Colin Baker era is that it doesn't have its own identity. Season 23 is full of Williams era knock offs and Season 22 is merely an extension of Season 21. Part 14 of Trial and Part 1 of Time and the Rani could not be more different despite having the same exact writers. The tone, the visual look, the costumes (with the exception of the reused Baker outfit), the music, the effects, the way the story is structured, everything is so different. The McCoy era has its own unique feel and barely resembles other JNT eras. It really does amuse me when people slag off his era despite how radically different the early seasons are from the later ones. There's nothing to suggest that the same person who produced Season 18 also produced Season 25 except for the fact that his name is in the credits.

The difference I'd say is it's the same producer operating to a different BBC instruction or dictate. In Season 18 they wanted a more serious show after the Williams comedy, and John complied, perhaps a *little* overzealously, and I think over time his sensibilities from doing pantomime gradually asserted themselves. Which is why I think it was a shock to fans when it happened under the same production team.

In Season 24 the BBC wanted a safe, defanged children's show after the Sawardian ultraviolence (In one meeting between Cartmel and Johnathan Powel, Powel asked Cartmel who he thinks the show is for, Cartmel replied 'for everybody', and the was swiftly corrected 'no. Doctor Who is for children'), so that's what we got that season.

We ranked the classic eras last week. Rating them out of 10 is slightly different.

If Baker's era had ended with Revelation I would have given it a 7.5 or 8 out of 10. I would have also given Pertwee a far higher rating had he left at the end of Season 10 instead of doing the truly terrible Season 11.
