The BBC approaches you to take over Doctor Who, you can do almost anything you want to try and improve the quality or the ratings of the show. Their only demand is that it must remain as 45 minute episodes with a fast pace so the ADHD youths can still enjoy it. What do you do?

  1. Respect the audience. A show can appeal to children without stupid writing that treats them like idiots.
  2. No more resolving stories with magic reset buttons.
  3. No romance between the Doctor and the companion, don't even tease it.
  4. No releasing episodes in the cinema.
  5. Stop trying to appeal to America so much, from filming there to showing episodes at the same time as in the UK.
  6. Stop chasing potential audiences altogether. The yanks, the SJW crowd, tumblr, reddit. Go back to point one and try to regain the audience that's always been there and continues to jump ship.
  7. Make sure the tone fits the story rather than throwing quips and shit in whenever you can.
  8. Drop series arcs for a while.

First thing. Change the 45 min format. Sorry, you can't limit me there Smile

Second, shake up the pool of writers. Yes, it will be a challenge but that is what is needed. Try and bring in non-fans as well as get Rob Shearman back.

Stop stunt casting. I know it hasn't happened that much lately - but stop it anyway!

Explore some alien worlds and if that means more wonga then so be it.

That should do for starters Twisted Evil

Forgot to mention the stunt casting and also hire somebody who knows how to get the most out of the effects. I'm bored of superheroes now and don't like the shows, but there's no denying CW's DC tv universe (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow) have some pretty good effects for so little money. CW is a channel where 2 and a half million viewers is a mega hit show and The Flash has a CGI gorilla, it's not a patch on the Planet of the Apes reboot series but it looks a lot better than anything in NuWho and probably costs a fraction of the price.

How about separate Producer and Script Editor? just like the old days.
The show doesn't still have a script editor? That explains so much.

It just seems like a wasted effort and isn't justified. I don't have a problem with the fans that pay to go and see an ordinary episode of a tv show on the big screen and enjoy it but it comes across as a shameless attempt to generate spectacle without putting in the work. The 50th was a special event so I'll give it a pass but the series 8 opener and the first episode of Sherlock series 4 was a cheap cashgrab.

It's not really that difficult. Get writers to come up with their own ideas instead of hamstringing them with hackneyed briefs, quit the endless smuggery and unfunny jokes, write the Doctor properly and give him a nice bit of skirt with something resembling a likeable personality. More two parters - real two parters, not two episodes with a vague link between them but actual movie length stories, and above all stop treating the whole thing like a fucking in-joke.

Yeah, after season 8 I kept saying two-parters were needed and then when season 9 arrived they didn't even make decent use of them. They are just trying to kill it off now aren't they?

My idea is stories that can be fixed in under ten minutes, if The Doctor hadn't been arrested under Martial Law from a military power even his usual UNIT credentials can't get him out of.
Obstacles, lots and lots of obstacles and longway rounds. Never know, maybe on the journey The Doctor could discover more personality about whoever he is put in this situation with.
Kill off the "Just because we can" and replace it with "So what happens now?".

A historical store where the TARDIS crash lands out of power in Hiroshima, 35 minutes before the bomb drops. No monsters, no returning villians, just The Doctor relying on wits and resources.
Oh well. That's why they don't have me as a writer or producer!

And would it be too much to have The Doctor have original unique quirks rather than wave arms around and make pop culture references?
"We did! He's called Capaldi!".
Well if pantomime grumpy for one season and then try too hard cool Dad in the next is considered "Unique" then stop now and step away from the typewriters!

The Doctor's guitar solo and sonic sunglasses are some of the worst things nuwho has done.

Ian hits the nail on the head, once again!

It's tricky thinking of how the show could reinvent itself and play to the strengths of the classic show tho without moving away from 45 minute standalone formats and ill-thought out season arcs. RTD admits that Buffy was a big influence on his version of Nu Who, but Moffat seems to have lacked the courage to either ditch these or refine them.

I would do the following : -

* Get away from the over-use of Daleks & the Master, unless there were a strong political subtext to their use in a story

* Try & avoid 'continuity porn' - if you've only got 45 mins to tell a story you've got no time for all that

* Ditch the smart-alec jokes, particularly after the Doctor/companion have had their 1st scene - dramatic build in a short story can't keep being interrupted

* Avoid winks at the audience (ruins atmosphere, also see 'continuity porn')

* If someone in the show dies, let them stay dead

* Put more hard science in the show

* Keep an emotional pull, but understate/underact it

I don't know if this would gain the required audience, but then maybe nothing else would now, either. Perhaps the new young audience is different to the RTD generation, hence the decline in viewing figures...

What is the biggest gripe?

For me, it's the tonal imbalance. The first episode of the last series is a prime example. RTD did it too, of course, with burping dustbins and farting aliens. Saying that, the Slitheen one is almost good. I quite like Love and Monsters, though, so what do I know? LOL

It's rare (apart from the odd episode like the Buffy-ish "School Reunion") that Nu Who balances humour, character development & drama. But even that episode shouldn't really be a template for the show, RTD was almost too keen to make Dr Who into a lite version of a Joss Whedon show.

I was more impressed with slightly more experimental stuff like "Sleep No More". But the thing that aggravates me most, as well as the show now being too self-aware, is the fact the humour has to constantly reference social media apps because they think a young audience might turn off in they're not mentioned every few exchanges! I don't remember turning off during the McCoy era because Sylv and Sophie hadn't kept referring to the ZX Spectrum.

Not to mention they'll probably be completely irrelevent in a few years, most will probably join vine in the internet graveyard.

One thing I would like to see return is The Doctor as the underdog rather than the lonely god.

This is a year old but how would you feel if DW was no longer made by the BBC?

www.theguardian.com/media/2015/dec/22/bbc-offers-indies-chance-to-make-strictly-come-dancing-and-doctor-who

The BBC’s has won over a sceptical independent TV production community to its plan to spin-off BBC Studios by offering the chance to make programmes such as Strictly Come Dancing and Doctor Who.
