This is unquestionably the worst place to post this LOL. But what the hell.
I like Barrowman a lot. I never got the hate for him in some corners of Who fandom personally.
I agree that Torchwood was shit. It wasn't his fault though. His performance was always at least enthusiastic and fun. Torchwood's problems were that its writing was too infantile and it was too obsessed with sex. And no that's not because its gay sex. (I actually think the WORST bit was Owen and Gwen's affair when he shoved her up against a tree and asked her if she cummed so hard she forgot who she was! The best thing about it was that scene was written by our feminist hero and champion Chris Chinballs.)
Still I did like Jack. I thought he was a good mix of the old, more straight forward, dashing, cheesy hero like Dan Dare and Buck Rodgers, and the more mopey, angsty, torture 90s anti hero like Angel. He also has a long, interesting backstory, and a good strong friendship with the Doctor. Unlike Donna or Rose he doesn't undermine the Doctor, nor does he have to be retconned into being the most important person in his entire life like Clara.
I also like characters who know the Doctor through multiple different lives. IMO they made a mistake not having him meet Matt and Capaldi. A team up of Jack and the Brig would have been fun too.
However its for Malcolm Merlyn that I really rate Barrowman as an actor. I'm in the middle of Arrow season three and Barrowman's performance is excellent.
The character couldn't be more different to Barrowman. I remember even saying to my friend the other day how funny it was in Arrow watching Barrowman, the Broadway, Panto star beat the shit out of famous hard man Vinnie Jones, because Vinnie Jones killed his wife! Still you buy it. In a way I think Barrowman is like Mark Hamill. Both shot to fame playing cheesy heroes, but later got a chance to really show what great actors they were as evil comic book villains.
Added to that I think Barrowman comes off as a great guy in interviews and at conventions. His comments about a female Doctor, though he had to tow the party line, they were perfectly fair and measured.
Also he looks like he'd be a great laugh at parties like this.
You can't unsee that
Overall I think he, along with Karen Gillan, Matt Smith and Freema Agyeman are the best things to come out of New Who.
