I wonder if the plebeians are simply sick of the show?

I think there should have been a major rest, say 18 months, so they could work up an appetite for the show again.

I'm not sure things are going to improve on the ratings front.

Unless they cast someone from Love Island in the starring role.

Of course, what that chart fails to take into account is the collapse in TV ratings in general. The Doctor Falls barely scraped 5 million after fiddling, but that was enough to make it beat Casualty and be the highest rated BBC show of the day. While there could be some improvement with a new Doctor and a new style, the fact is you're not going to see Tennant-era ratings again ever in today's climate.
