Modern conventions are about aggressively extracting as much money as possible from the conventionees.

I don't understand why anyone would be proud of a picture they'd paid to have taken with their supposed 'hero'.

It's much more satisfying to get a spontaneous pic from an accidental crossing of paths than to know it was all about self-enrichment.

Plus, all the panels these days drone on about social issues and identity politics.

I can't think of anything more boring tbh.

I've been to a few over the years.

The last one I went to was in Bedford this year, and I can concur with Boofer that the party line was very pro-Jodie and pro-representation, and that's been the party line at a few I've gone to lately.

Have either of you actually met any of the cast there?

I've met quite a few, but never really get to chat to them for long. I've talked a bit with Sophie Aldred, Colin Baker, Wendy Padbury, Carol Ann Ford, Louise Jameson. All have been pretty lovely.

I've only gone to some in recent times, most notably, London, MCM and Vwrop Con. Needless to say that I had a blast in all 3 events. It's so enlightening to see cosplayers and their craftsmanship and attention to detail, most people that I've interacted with are lovely and thoughtful, some being pretty adorable, and the celebrities that I planned to see are absolutely lovely and humble people. Sophie Aldred, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Katy Manning, all lovely people. Also conventions seem to be the only form of place that I can get whatever I want to.

I have no desire to spend my afternoon with a bunch of obese, blue-haired communists and milennial Jodie cosplayers. Frankly, it would feel like entering enemy territory. I considered going to meet Peter Davison earlier this year, but decided it wasn't worth the potential aggravation. Knowing that Colin will be the only classic Doctor there next year, I'm not even thinking about it. As much as I love his performance, the guy is an embarrassment nowadays.

I've just never really been that interested in that side of it, and yeah, these days... they're not even really for the show I'm a fan of.

I met Chris Lowe once. I said to him that he looked like a complete belled wearing shades and a hat indoors. He surprisingly didn't reply. Then Neil Tennant showed up and they both left. It was an interesting experience.
