One of my favourite Hollywood directors. I’m going for GoodFellas myself.

Cat in the Hat (2003) I think that was done by Scorsese.
It has all the hallmarks of one of his films.

Have to confess I've never seen any of his films that's made me want to own it, or watch more than once.
Looking down the list I was fully expected to be reminded of one I'd forgotten about that I found really good, but no I'm afraid not.
Sorry I'm such a party pooper. Lol

That’s fair enough. Though to clarify, I mainly highly rate his catalogue up to 1990. After that, he’s very hit and miss.Ronnie wrote:Have to confess I've never seen any of his films that's made me want to own it, or watch more than once.

I’ve never really got Tarantino myself- not sure if you feel the same way or not.

It's very tricky. He's made such phenomenal movies like Goodfellas, Casino, Taxi Driver, Shutter Island and Wolf of Wall Street. I completely agree that he's a fantastic director, I don't think he has made a consistently bad record. I might go with Shutter Island because I was shocked by the twists, and the atmosphere was gorgeous. Plus, everyone's giving Goodfellas some love, so I'm going to be a contrarian.

I voted Silence.
None of his other films have quite blown me away like that did.

Can't abide Tarantino. Most overrated film maker ever.
I suppose I don't really go for particular film makers. I like all different kinds of films for all sorts of reasons, but it's very much about the individual films rather than who made them.
Kubrick, Von Trier, Friedkin, whoever... I really like a couple of films by these directors, but the rest range from meh to pretty goodm

Love Kubrick and Friedkin- well, specifically concerning Friedkin, I love The French Connection and The Exorcist. Not massively into Von Trier, though.Ronnie wrote:Can't abide Tarantino. Most overrated film maker ever.

Yeah- I suppose not being selective about directors enables for a broadened preference.

There's a nasty cynicism about typically assuming the predictable worst in human nature that bothers me about Von Trier's films.

Take War films for instance... My two favourites couldn't be more different....... Downfall (Der Untergang), and Where Eagles Dare.
Dark, intense, delusional and nihilistic, with an incredible (if much parodied) performance by Bruno Ganz, vs pure Commando comic action adventure with Richard Burton chewing the scenery and Clint Eastwood, well... being Clint Eastwood. Lol

That’s very much how I feel about them as well. Especially in the case of Antichrist. There’s not much in the way of thought provoking allegory there so much as coerced adolescent morbidness.Tanmann wrote:There's a nasty cynicism about typically assuming the predictable worst in human nature that bothers me about Von Trier's films.

Von Trier is a depressive. Nevertheless, I think Melancholia are Dancer in the Dark are two brilliant films.
Some of his stuff is too gratuitous for me though.

Not seen that one but, boy, I think you've just summed up perfectly the feeling from the ones by him I *have* seen (Element of Crime, Dogville).

To be fair I think the central character in Downfall is nihilistic, but I don't think the film itself is (I feel the film itself doesn't have a mean-spirited bone in its body). I think the film is a very understanding one, and intends the takeaway that this was a man with huge demons that he allowed to overwhelm him and lead his country to ruin and disgrace with the power of his monstrous cult of personality, and who should never have been given the power he was, and ultimately his fate and those of his followers is kind of a cathartic one that says let us never go down that route again.
The ethos of the film I think is very moral and humanist whilst highlighting a figure who certainly was not.

Yes, fair point in that Hitler obviously embodies the nihilism, but I think ultimately what I'm getting at is perhaps exemplified by Magda Goebbels response to a the idea of a without Nazism. By far one of the most powerful and disturbing scenes in the film.

Classic Scorsese! You notice the parody of tumblr SJWs despite the fact that tumblr wasn't even around at the time? This movie is so ahead of its time like most of his films are. Incredible filmmker.
