Love and Monsters vs Fear Her

Which was worse?


I've gone for Fear Her. One of the worst stories ever made although at least it didn't piss all over the program's established history.

Love and Monsters was my favourite episode back in 2006. I obviously don't rate it now, but I still don't think it's bottom ten stuff.

Fear Her was a bit on the nose.
Love & Monsters was like being victimized by a perverted flasher.

I thought Love and Monsters was far worse. While i initially regarded it as a self deprecating look in the mirror by humble Dr who fans (inluding the likes of RTD and Moffat), i increasingly feel it was a rather nasty jibe directed at fans of the classic series who Davies felt were failing to appreciate his more adult, grown up style of Nuwho.

I didnt mind "Fear Her" as much. I was rather indifferent to it. My biggest problem with it at the time was that i felt it had an "anti-father" theme about it. But i was probably reading too much into it.

I find L&M rather funny myself. Fear Her sucks, but where's New Earth? That's the worst of series 3 by a long way.

'Fear Her' was worse by far - everything wrong with NuWho is encapsulated in this ridiculously disposable, cack-handed episode.  By the latter stages of Series 2, I couldn't stand the sight of Tennant & Piper, so something like 'Love and Monsters', in which they hardly appear, automatically gets my vote.   Plus, I'm rather partial to the music of ELO and it's rather puerile but I remember liking the sort of 'Carry On/Benny Hill'-ness of Jackie's line to Elton:
"Here we are, complete strangers, and I'm flashing you me knickers" (Do people still say 'knickers'? or is the American term 'panties' more common nowadays?)

However, the thought of ever watching either episode again fills me with an overwhelming dread.

Panties is so much kinkier.

Fear Her, 45 minutes of appallingly written, dull filler.

Fear Her was just dull and aimed more at kids than usual. Perhaps a rewrite could have knocked it into shape. I am doubtful.

L&M, on the other hand, was rather fun. I like Doctor-Lite episodes. I don't get how anyone can be offended by it being aimed at Doctor Who fans unless you consider yourself one of the kind of Doctor Who fans that it might have been aimed at. Yeah, the patio slab blowjob joke was shite - but that's just a brief bit at the end.

Listen was more offence to me, as it treated the audience like idiots.

Elton Pope is actually a more interesting and likeable character than the Tenth Doctor. I think Marc Warren really lifts that episode and comes across as very relatable.

L&M because Fear Her, for all its dreadful acting, premise and awful torch finale, didn't come across as a mocking parody of everything Dr Who once was. It was the moment Nu Who pissed all over the rulebook, in the worst possible way - even nonsense like the wheelie bin and Slitheen hadn't sunk it to those depths.

Camille Coduri was hot back then. There's no one in Fear Her I can really wank over.
