At the end of every mass at school, we would usually sing along to a tape of Imagine or Graham Kendrick's Tonight (Glory to God). The teacher would climb the steps among the seating to the back of the school Hall, press play on the sound system and descend the steps back to their seat.

One time, someone managed to surreptitiously swap the tape for This Bloke Came Up to Me.

By the time the deputy head managed to sprint back up the stairs, at least 15 seconds had elapsed.

The head went full apeshit and ordered the entire school to stay behind in silence - even forgoing lesson time - until someone confessed.

90 mins passed and no-one was willing to own up to it. Everyone was warned ad nauseam in a ramblingly righteous speech that any mention of this 'disgusting' incident would lead to suspension. Old Rubberlips (for twas his name) was particularly offended that this abominable situation had occurred during the Eucharist, and that God and Father Michael were particularly ashamed of us.

After the assembly was dismissed the teachers decided to use the usual methods of interrogation, pressure and privilege withdrawal in order to weed out the culprit. Except no-one knew who it was. There was no lead, no sniff of of a culprit, nor any circumstantial evidence to pin on some poor pissweasel who happened to be around the community magnetophone just before the assembly.

I suspect it was a lone wolf operation (a bad wolf indeed).

Also, the head's warnings didn't stop the circulation of the Derek and Clive live album less than a week or two later. Apparently, 3 copies were left in the library, each marked with the words 'naughty naughty' on the spine. By the end of the week everyone I knew had a copy.

Your story reminds me of that bit from The Singing Detective when somebody did a 'Tommy Robinson' on the teacher's desk - sorry that wasn't really relevant to anything
