I hope this doesn't sound simplistic or 'off the point' but I think it generally either replaces other more nuanced, historically deep cultures with a shallow commercialism or rejects theirs altogether - whether it be with food, music or anything else (though there are certainly exceptions). I'd like to provide 3 rather disparate examples : -

* I've been reading John Simpson's books about the Iraq conflicts, which provide yet more evidence about the Americans' shoddy treatment of the locals and made the jobs for the other forces based there much harder

* Pop music, particularly that of the 1970s, shows a fascinating difference between the USA and other culture, notably the blues/hard rock of the States and the emerging electronica of the European scene, most notably Germany with Kraftwerk and Neu!. The reason being was that there was a resistance from the Europeans to the simplicity of the American scene and a desire to create something distinct. David Bowie picked the perfect moment to see the limitations of the American culture he'd once so aspired towards, and headed off to Berlin at the perfect moment to reinvent his career

* Finally if you watch Saturday night TV lately in Britain - which I think Monk would wisely be avoiding - there's been a seachange for the worse. Something like 'The Masked Singer' would probably have been deemed far too American a few years ago, with the OTT behaviour of the panel, but it's ironic that now X Factor etc may be coming to end the Saturday night entertainment they helped to wreck has becoming even more Americanised. And as for The Voice - will.i.am's incomprehensible personality seems to have infected Tom Jones, turning him into a series of noises and grunts!

I don't live in the UK, so I don't see much UK TV at all.

I get to see Americans act like absolute fuckers here though. I refuse to associate with them, because they just do not respect the culture. They refuse to integrate, won't follow the social norms here in Japan, and God help you if an American coworker gets any power. They will betray ANYONE for their career progression. They have absolutely no sense of honor, even among other Americans.

Fun fact, the Japanese word for an anti-social person is "yankee". It's obvious why.

At the moment I'm in the USA for a month. There are normal people here too. *shock/horror*
