So good it deserves it own thread.

Me and ya boy from Gatchell were so dumbstruck with the amazes after the first episode that I needed a hernia repair, and Bobby shot his suppository across the room with so much force his missus had to get out the polyfilla. No shit.

Sinister, totalitarian undertones mingle with high drama and unforced panic. There's this crushing sense of 'duty', which really amounts to 'do it my way or go to the gulag', but it never needs to be said at any point. You follow orders, even if they're the wrong orders. The power of the state is total. You do as you're told - even if it results in your death or those of others.

Donald Sumpter steals every scene he's in as Zharkov, a party official who is as paternalistic and as he is unnerving, and Jared Harris's turn as Valery Legasov is sympathetic, gripping and honest.

The first episode closes with a brilliantly simple foreboding metaphor.

This is 10/10 TV.

Suck your mum if you don't agree.

p.s.

If it hadn't been for the 'suicide squad' of Boris Baranov, Valeri Bezpalov and Alexei Ananenko, who went back into the plant to drain off millions of litres of water, then the melting Uranium would have reacted with said water, making Europe uninhabitable for hundreds of years.

I don't think Lenny Henry or Patrick Kielty would have been much cop in this.

Episode 2: smashing anything else on the telly. Tremendous stuff.

If you're not watching, you're a dirty imperialist.

внимание! внимание!

Also,  It just struck me how much the music reminded me of some the the radiophonic workshop stuff.

The soundtrack is by the marvellous Cellist and composer, Hildur Guðnadóttir and is being released on Deutsche Grammophon.

Everything about this show is class.

I don't currently get TV signals and don't own a TV licence.

I'll have to wait till this comes out on DVD then. But sounds like a must-watch, definitely.

Have you discovered Kodi or torrents yet?

I mean, it's naughty, but I've been doing the naughty for 20+ years now so I've become habituated to it.

Ah okay, I might try downloading Kodi then. My computer seems to still have enough disc space for it, amazingly enough (I only just uploaded three new games to it).

This is the best series ever made.

It's not even up for discussion any more.

I get the feeling that Boofer is enjoying the show quite a bit. Nice to see he's finally given up on trying to be like us brainy kids who can grasp a simple story like "Ghost Light" and found something far easier for his brain to comprehend.

Sorry but Ghostlight never made much sense to me either.

Always been a fan of Jared Harris. He was fantastic in Fringe.

A satisfying, yet devastating conclusion to one of the best series ever made.

Valery Legasov: a party man, an imperfect man, who stood on the side of righteousness - in fact, and in fiction.

I've pre-ordered it on Amazon.

I watched this in full last month. Let’s just say that it was the perfect televisual antidote for the sheer lack of quality exhibited in Game of Thrones Season 8. I’m with Boofer on this- it’s superb.

it was mostly very good but they could have done a little more reading around radiation/nuclear power especially as the drama was in large part reliant on factuality

i lost some interest when they made a whole plot point around the firefighter's radiation and his pregnant wife which made no sense

It's just a bit of artistic licence. Nothing wrong with that.

Lyudmilla Ignatenko's child was born with a heart defect and died 4 days later.

It's been theorised that her exposure to her husband may have caused the issue, but no-one can be certain.

The whole 'absorbing radiation' thing was scientific bollocks, but I'm not sure I care.
