I like the Orbital version but it's too minimalist to ever really get a chance. I liked it when DW was small and niche and had integrity. OK, it often fell on its face but these days it's designed to appeal to the masses in a very specific way. I would rather a glorious mess than a bland success.
The musical paradigm for the show is creatively bankrupt. Listen to the atmospheric music in Power of the Daleks with the weird creepy noises. That's how it should be, barely music.
The Cybermen's space adventure is much more recognisable as music but the sounds used evoke a real sense of strangeness. Though, it was really odd and out of place when they used it over the battle of Covent Garden in The Web of Fear.
DW has a rich musical history it can be proud of and now we just have Murray Gold. Is he staying next season? I am not sure they would do anything that different.

This, although the show does throw up some occasional gems: like the original cybermarch.
But maybe I'm weird. I like most of Derbyshire's experimental stuff.
This being one of my favourites, especially the way the crisp diction soots perfectly into th dark ambience.
Way too orchestral. The theme should be electronic and spooky, not something that sounds like it plopped out of the arse of a mediocre American composer.

The current Dr Who theme and titles are complete crap and totally uninspiring. IMO the best version of the theme tune was Peter Howell's with Sid Sutton's starfield followed by Dominic Glynn's and Delia Derbyshire's fantastic original. I remember as a kid one of the highlights of Dr Who was the music and titles. With the new series the new theme arrangement and titles are totally forgetful and uninspiring.
