I've come to the end of series 9, with just The Husbands of River Song left. So... Did they give us any answers to the Clara/impossible girl plot or did I miss it? How did she keep dying and coming back? Is it Jack Harkness magic or the same thing that kept female Quasimodo coming back all series in different time periods? Are those the same type of magic?

Wasn't it Name of the Doctor that was explained by her jumping into his time-stream and splintering like Scaroth the Jagaorth? Jack was the Bad Wolf time vortex from the Tardis thing. So it's all timey-wimey nonsense.

You're right, google says so. I must have mixed up Doctors because I could have sworn it was Capaldi who didn't trust her in an episode. They were on the edge of a cliff on near lava or something and he kept calling her the impossible girl and demanding to know who she really was.

It was the edge of a cliff inside the TARIDS where Matt demands to know who she is...then they litterally hit a big magic reset button and forget the whole thing...'till somehow they remember in Name of the Doctor, and it's that which spurs Clara on to splinter herself

Good luck, you'll need it. Possibly the worst episodes of series 9 for me.

Ian! Ian? Guys, I think we might've lost him!

That Dalek 2 parter is up there (down there?) with Death In Heaven, for me. It comes to something when the stronger episode in a two-parter is the one where the baddies get defeated by someone sabotaging their sewage!

Quite possibly the worst of the season for me. At least it gets better after that. The very first episode was a cartoon.

Fixed.

I thought the Davros scenes would have been alright if he didn't open his eyes and they followed through with it. Instead it was all a ploy for their plan, even though nothing would change in the plan if he didn't deliver that whole speech. The Doctor was already there, they could have just ambushed him and succeeded because there wouldn't have been enough time for Clara and Missy to fuck around and ruin it.

But then they wouldn't be able to fill out two 45 minute episodes. Having smart heroes figure out a way to defeat the villains would be to much work, instead we need villains to create a bunch of plot contrivances to ensure that they don't succeed.

Very few of those stories used the two part structure and extra time effectively. The first half-hour of the first episode was just filler. Maybe the Zygon one being the exception. Listen, Kill the Moon and Into the Forest of the Night were the opposite. The first half hours weren't too bad but the final 15mins for various reasons just fell apart.

Everybody complains about the classic series having filler but it seems with the pace the modern series unravels they can only effectively fill half an hour. I don't remember RTD having this problem and suspect it's down to exhaustion on Moffat's part. He's just out of ideas.

I lasted less than 20 minutes before turning it off and watching the Buffy season 1 finale (great!) instead. LOL
Why did I buy this crap, why? (Actually I know why. It's been so long since trying any Crapoldie I was conned into the "it can't be as bad as all that" optimism. It can, and it is).
Absolutely fucking dreadful stuff. I'm increasingly convinced this once most wonderful of shows is actually now the single worst program on TV.

You didn't literally buy it, did you Ian?

Particularly shameful about that episode was the guitar-playing on top of the tank - and the story's general desperation to be noticed. The RTD era was dumb and often very bad, but it never felt forced like this kind of story.

Come on Ian what did you think of Death in Heaven? I really want to know though I can guess LOL.

I also agree with the Buffy season 1 finale. Loved the bit in the Church where the Master ambushes her. Great acting from Sarah Michelle Gellar when the Master taunts her. You can really feel her fear and heartbreak when he tells her that she would have been safe if she had just stayed away.

I always thought Anthony Head would have been a fantastic Master incidentally.

I have not seen that piece of crap and doubt I ever will!
Season 1 of Buffy is still great. It's not the heights of seasons 2-5 but I really like the innocence of it and there are still some real standouts like the finale, The Pack and the hilarious The Puppet Show. I can't believe its 20 this year. God, I'm old. Sad

I understand. Its honestly the worst piece of television I have ever seen.

Buffy season 1 is great. Normally when introducing someone to a show you have to tell them it doesn't get good until later, but with Buffy its brilliant from the start.

Its just the last two series that don't hold up IMO, though even then the worst episode of Buffy never plumbs the depths of New Who.

Spike kind of took over the show a bit too much in S7 and I say that as someone who always said he was my favourite. I didn't like the Spike being in love with Buffy story.

We had already seen that storyline beat for beat on two different shows that were on at the same time as Buffy! Cole with Phoebe on Charmed, and Ares with Xena on Xena. All 3 are a supernatural creature who is naturally evil (Vampire, Demon War God) who suddenly becomes good because he falls in love with a heroine, and in all three cases he loses his powers and becomes more human and she has to protect him, and she denies having feelings for him but she obviously does etc.

I think of the three of them Cole kept his dignity throughout the whole situation the most, Ares got a bit whiny but wasn't that bad for the most part, whilst we can all agree Spike most certainly did NOT keep his dignity at any point when he was in love with Buffy LOL

I watched The Husbands of River Song last night, and I think I kind of enjoyed it. It wasn't good, but it was as close to harmless fun as you could hope for. Certainly not the worst episode or even the worst Christmas special. Even Matt Lucas isn't as annoying as I worried he'd be. Maybe the show has just worn me down.

And since we have this Buffy talk, is Angel worth a watch? I've never seen an episode since I never really cared for him in Buffy. I used to love Buffy when it was on tv and bought the complete Buffy and Angel boxsets a few years ago. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy the show as much as I used to and found season 5 to be awful outside of a couple of episodes, to be fair I was marathoning the show without any days off or other shows to break it up so it's possible I was burnt out at that point. When I watch it all again I'll have to pace myself and see if that brings back any of the magic.

It was probably a mistake to start Angel right after, but I turned it off not even halfway through the first episode. Worth a shot or is it a lesser show?

Angel's first season is shite...but there's a cast change early on in the series and it gets slightly better...but I'd advise you stick with it as from season two onwards it finds it's edge and by the end of it's run, it was far superior to Buffy, which should have ended when they graduated and killed The Mayor.

The freshmen/adult years for Buffy are a real drag, there's still some exceptional episodes in the later years ("Hush", "Restless", "The Body", "The Gift" "Once More, With Feeling") but the most part it's just nothing but diminishing returns.

I loved the first season of Angel. IMO it and season 5 are the best two seasons. I think Angel falls apart in season 3 and 4 is just a mess, though there are still some great eps.

Season 5 is the best though of either show IMO. It has some amazing stand alone's a great story arc (several in fact) great new characters and Angel and Spike together are just comedy gold. Spike was really pussified in the later Buffy's but they redeemed him in Angel season 5. Him and Angel always had the best relationship with each other IMO.

And Ant Mac yes Angel is a bit of a pussy on Buffy. Obviously the reason for that was because unlike RTD who had no respect for the character of the Doctor and went out of his way to undermine him, Joss Whedon naturally didn't want the main character of his show Buffy to be second fiddle to her sidekick (well not until the ridiculously OPed Willow in season 7) so Angel is a pussy.

On his own show however he is a ridiculous badass and a more fun character.

I quite enjoyed Husbands of River Song. I mean I detest the character and I am not fond of the actress but she wasn't overwhelming smug this time around and hopefully it's the last we will see of her. Plus I quite enjoyed the episode itself. A bit above average and that's good for a Christmas one. Everybody else seems to hate it but I still reckon it was better than Dr Mysterio
