Waste of a great guest star. Lots of atmosphere. Little threat. Big reset.
Didn't help that the biggest intrigue was the Vault scene at the end.
Next week looks like a step up though.
Unless that collapses in the last ten minutes. Not missing much if you miss this.

I didn't care for it. Not bad enough to be considered bad but it was a step down from the last couple of episodes. I liked the set up and was looking forward to David Suchet but by the end it felt like a waste of an episode.

Next episode looks decent, though I said that about this one last week.

Had Bill's flatmates stayed dead, this would have been a bit of a hit with me, though sadly Pearl did'nt seem like she gave two fucks the whole episode compared to Thin Ice.

C'mon, there's no excuse, Dollard killed a kid last week and it stuck...why be so fragile again?

The Vault's occupant has also been normalized...The Doctor went out to give it a takeaway and is flirting with it...it's obviously Missy now.

Suchett was amazing though, and kept the whole thing atmospheric and escalated the situation virtually single-handidly. He was also unrempantant and irredeemable 'till the very end, forcing his mother's hand, even after she encouraged him to go out and see the world, and ultimately be driven to take her and her son off the table. It's quite a tragic outcome which also could have been elevated further if she had'nt restored everyone to life at the end and we'd seen more emotional range from Bill.

Missed oppertunities

Excellent episode all around. I'd say that is the best episode of the series and possibly the best Capaldi ep.

The monster was really quite creepy and tragic, David Suchet great as always (though to be honest I thought the twist was a little pointless).

The guest stars were likable enough, and Bill is really shaping up to be a great companion. Even when we see her home life it isn't boring like miss smug pants.

I'm convinced much like everyone else that that's the Master in the vault though whether its Simm or she who shall not be named I'm not sure. UGH I don't like the way they have the Doctor and the Master as friends in New Who. Its crap. It undermines both characters.

It undermines the Doctor as a hero as he is someone who is happy to be friends with a mass murderer, whilst the Master meanwhile is lame as a villain as the only reason he keeps surviving is because the Doctor goes soft on him.

Look at The Mind of Evil and The Deadly Assassin where they both try and kill each other and thus both score a victory as though the Masters plan fails the Doctor still doesn't prevent him from causing lots of damage and escaping unscathed.

Maybe it's just because The Pilot was rushed and glossed over a lot, but I thought she cared more about a girl who came across as someone she'd only met a few times than she did her flatmates.

I'm convinced it's Simm's Master because the tapping on the vault door last week reminded me of his "sound of drums" scene.

I'm wondering if the Doctor already knew though. Buying takeaway for the person behind the door suggests he knows and they're friendly, but this is nuwho so I wouldn't be surprised if him opening the door is some big, dramatic revelation for the Doctor.

That was a truly shitty episode - the worse so far of series 10.  I feel sorry for Capaldi and Suchet having to appear in nonsense like this, and yet another drippy fairy tale ending. I hope Bartlett doesn't write for the show again - but then - different writers, same crap.

I'm honestly surprised to see anyone call that one the worst of series 10? Obviously each to their own I am not having a go or anything, but I thought the wooden lady was really creepy.

IMO that was a real step up from the one with the Emoji robots at least. The Emoji robots were too silly to take seriously. Again imagine how funny it would have been if they had wiped humanity out after we survived Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans etc. The Emoji bots were just too cute to be the main monster.

Also I felt this story was a bit more original too. I am honestly amazed that nobody commented on the Emoji robot one just being a rip off of The Happiness Patrol?

Overall I'd say series 10 has been okay though. If this had been Capaldi's first series coming straight after the Matt era I'd probably rank it a lot higher. However sadly coming after the two worst ever series of DW it probably feels a little bit more underwhelming, as at this stage we would need a series at least on a par with Seasons 12, 13, 26, 7 of old who and 5 of new who.

I thought the wooden woman looked cheap and shoddy, but hey - just my opinion. Wink   I was expecting a lot from this episode, as it was hyped so much in the latest DWM, but I really think it fell flat and was quite ordinary - NuWho by numbers.  To do an effective, convincing ghost story, you really need more than 40 odd minutes to play with; you also need people in danger who you care about (the students were a pretty bland bunch and didn't gain my sympathy at all) plus it undermines everything if the victims are brought back at the end, rendering the story rather irrelevant and disposable. Still, I did like the short closing scene with Nardole, the Doctor, the Mexican meal and the piano playing. Very Happy  Each to their own..
Off to watch The Haunting - over 50 years old, but that's how you do a proper ghost story.

Although I've got an image of the writer of the episode sending the script off and waiting for the paycheck, only to see the deaths in the first couple of episodes and thinking "FUCK!!". Very Happy
And yes I know, there's more communication between writers and producers than just sending your script off!

I have to agree with this. I thought the design was a little goofy to begin with and it didn't help with the way it looked when it moved and spoke. It's the same issue with the more recent cybermen episodes where you could see the "metal" fold every time they moved. If they're going to cheap out of the costumes they could at least try to hide the fact that it's just foam.

For all its faults, I thought Smile was really good, visually. The emojibots looked like robots for the most part and I liked the look of the building and scenery.

Looking up the writers for this series, I'm optimistic for Oxygen and The Lie of the Land.

Smile looked fantastic - proper sci fi futurism and I didn't mind the white robots, really. The story, however, was very derivative.  Let's hope Oxygen's zombies in space tale gets it right.

Oh god The Haunting scared the crap out of me so much! That bit where the woman hangs herself. Its just the look on her face as she is walking up the steps with the narration "whatever there was and still is in the house, drove the companion. MAD!" Never fails to send shivers down my spine.

Personally I thought the effects for the wooden women were good. The actress was still able to put in a good performance despite the fact that it covered her face. She looked like she was in pain.

Yes, The Haunting is a superb film (they shamefully remade it in 1999, but it was panned by the critics & I've no desire to see that version). I love old ghost stories - I used to scare myself silly as a kid watching the BBC Xmas ghost stories, but one of my faves is Nigel Kneale's The Stone Tape. Have you seen this?  Highly recommended.

I thought this was pretty good, actually, certainly miles better than last week's abomination. A solid horror episode with David Suchet giving good villain, spoiled only by the utterly unnecessary "bring everyone back to life" ending. Rolling Eyes FGS New Who, you finally have an episode with some decent horror content only to cop out on it at the end! This show really needs someone with actual balls running it again. Even Russell's era had more balls than this.
Even with that cop-out, though, this was probably still the best episode of series 10 so far.

Glad you liked it Iank.

Under Russel, I think this sort of ep would have ended with Bill's friends either dying OR, if they were all brought back, they'd be more emotionally scarred and would shun Bill for associating herself with The Doctor.

I'd so love to see that sort of reaction. We saw it in Donna's first encounter but they bottled out. I'd love for Bill to be shunned and turned against but probably won't happen.
*Sits in armchair producer's chair
I would of had it that if you do travel with The Doctor, you get to see and do incredible stuff but it comes at a cost.
And that cost is you lose all friendships, the world thinks you're really weird and every job you apply for turns you down.
But obviously, not going to see that in the snow so may as well put that one to bed!

To be fair, I'm not sure such a reaction would have been justified in the ep. They still don't think of the Doctor as anything other than a university lecturer and Bill's grandfather who just happened to be there when all hell broke loose, so they didn't have any reason to blame either of them for what happened.

Got done rewatching the episode and it was a lot better the second time around. Some thoughts:

Pros
*Decent atmosphere.
*David Suchet is a shining example of how to do guest stars and did his best to elevate the material.
*I liked that the Doctor was investigating making mental notes of all the odd little details.

Cons
*The mother not daughter twist wasn't needed, if I'm honest they could have cut the wood woman altogether and had an episode about killer woodlice.
*The resolution does nothing to change the image that nuwho doesn't know how to satisfyingly end a story.

I'm still struggling to figure out why the Doctor wanted to play music on Bill's phone. At first I thought he was being clever and testing the acoustics since he was suspicious about the house but nothing came of it. Then I thought he was just trying to create a fun mood to get the students to stay together where he could keep an eye on them, but he didn't seem to care when 3 of them (including Bill) buggered off.

And since we were already shown that the lice were drawn to music with the record player and music box, shouldn't they have swarmed the room when the music started playing?

If I could change my vote in the poll I'd rate it higher than I did on saturday, I think I could happily rewatch the episode every so often if I get the DVD boxset somewhere down the line.

Rubbish. Why was the wood person a woman when she could easily have been a man. There were already multiple women in the episode. I mean come on let's have some balance.

I know nothing about fashion but that is one ugly bikini. Looks like tin foil. The movie was a lot of fun though, managed to get the b-movie feel without trying to be so bad it's good Sharknado shit.
